Shonda Rhimes; the creator of hit TV Show Grey's Anatomy is notorious for breaking hearts of fans all over the world; multiple times over. Season after season she builds up characters, makes us love them and then rips the ground out from under us and just breaks out hearts. Here are some of the best and worst moments of the last twelve seasons.

Season 1: "You must be the woman who's been sleeping with my husband." So we begin the series meeting the dreamy Derek Shepherd; Brain surgeon and all round hottie who is chasing our main character Meredith Grey. She pushes him away time and time again until she finally cannot resist his dreaminess any longer, they are together and it is perfect.... until the season finale when his wife shows up! Not that I don't love Addison, coz I do; but this was the first time I had a WTF moment on the show. Heaven knows that there were dozens more to come...

Season 2: Denny! (Need I say more?) :'( Denny Duquette charmed our dear Izzy Stevens silly. He was charming and riddled with heart disease. After a long time trying to fight it, Izzy finally admits defeat and falls head over heels and does everything in her power to save his life. They get engaged in a hyper dramatic moment and then, of course... He dies anyway and we just die a little with him. Season two also saw us through the whole "Pick me, love me, choose me" scene between Mer and Der when he choses Addison, but as we all know, that one actually works out in the end.

Season 3: "Be extraordinary Meredith!" In typical Shondaland drama, Meredit falls into the ocean and stops fighting. Derek eventually finds her and gets her out, but she is whiter than snow and not breathing. They all fight to save her and Derek is outside her room crying as he realises that she knows how to swim but simply didn't. Meredith is in some sort of limbo, talking to Denny and the Bomb Squad guy and the train patient and eventually, crosses her mother in the hallway as she survives and her mother doesn't. We were on the edge of our seats. We knew, or at least hoped we knew, that a show called 'Grey's Anatomy' couldn't actually go on without Grey herself, but it was a very long wait between episodes. (Surprisingly, this one did not take place in the season finale. Not that the finale wasn't heart wrenching too. Mer cutting Cristina out of her wedding dress was pretty sad).

Season 4: Rose I do infact realise that the majority of my heartbreaks are related to Mer and Der. I swear the other characters will get their due attention too, but Mer and Der are in fact my OTP, incase it wasn't clear. So season four's big heart break; to me was Rose! This elevator scene was just the most awkward scene in all 12 seasons if you ask me, but Rose's entire existence plagued me. Thank god it didn't last very long. The end of season 4, when their clinical trial works and Mer makes the house out of candles, is just amazing!

Season 5: Post it Wedding / 007 / Izzy's Cancer. Season 5 really put us through a ringer. We start with Meredith's horrible Derek dying dream, and continue to Denny reappearing and Izzy finally figuring out that it is because she is sick. Derek losing his patient and hitting the engagement ring into the wild like a golf ball, Izzy and Alex's Wedding, Derek proposing to Meredith in the elevator, the Post-It note wedding, Izzy crashing and finally.... 007. Season 5's finale was the most heart breaking we had seen so far... It was the first major tear fest Shonda put us through and we are still reeling from it.

Season 6: "I'm your eye for an eye." So Mer finds out she is pregnant, then Derek gets shot. Yang and Avery are operating on him when the shooter comes back to make them stop. Mer tells him to shoot her instead because She is Richard's surrogate daughter, Lexie's sister and Derek's wife, so she is is eye for an eye. Then Hunt gets shot, and while Meredith is operating on him, she miscarries.

Season 7: Song beneath the Song. Callie is pregnant with Mark's baby and she and Arizona get into a horrible accident and the song episode begins. Its weird and heart breaking and amazing. Callie has the best voice ever. and her singing to herself just makes me cry. Mark crying in Lexie's lap, Them all singing and fighting to save Callie's life. Sofia's birth etc. They're all such great singers. Especially Callie, Owen and Bailey!

Season 8: Plane Crash (This one was a given!) I don't think I even need to mention this one. It totally goes without saying that the plane crash that killed Lexie, amputated Arizona, and left them all stranded for days was beyond awful. Killing Lexie was unforgivable. This is the first time that I told myself I was done with Grey's Anatomy; that Shonda had gone too far. Of course I was dragged back in though

Season 9: "She's Our Person" As if Mer and Der haven't been through enough by this stage. After adopting Zola, Mer gets pregnant again and all is going great until she takes a fall just before she delivers and it causes problems for her during the delivery. Of course all this happens while a huge storm terrorises the hospital and cuts all the power. In the meantime Avery almost dies in a burning bus and Arizona sleeps with Peyton Sawyer. We do also see a very adorable proposal between Matthew and April though. Even though I am a Japril fan, that was the cutest! Let's not forget Richard getting electrocuted and almost dying and Mousey being sent down to rescue him and actually dying!

Season 10: "He may be dreamy but he is not the sun; you are!" Season 10 saw Mer and Yang through the worst arguments of their friendship and it was awful; but then they make up and then Yang leaves and it is devastating. Derek is trying to convince Meredith to move to Washington so he can work for the POTUS but Yang tells her that "He may be dreamy but he is not the sun; you are." They have one last thirty second dance party and it is the perfect ending to the twisted sisters!

Season 11: "It's a beautiful day to save lives." OK, also no further explanation necessary. This was the most unforgivable death yet. The end of Mer and Der. The end of McDreamy. It's not just that Derek died; that was pretty unforgivable all on its own, but it is how he died. How Shonda handled his death. Ok if I'm being really honest I probably would have been mad regardless because him dying at all just isn't fair, but Mer just let him go. Ok fine, what else was she supposed to do? He was already brain dead. But its just not fair. How does the foremost neurosurgeon in the country die of brain injuries. And how is he not given the proper medical care. Why was he not take to Grey-Sloane?! It basically just all round sucks.

Season 12: Meredith's attack. So let's just get this straight. Meredith Grey has been through: Drowning, Losing her Mother, losing her stepmother, losing her sister, a plane crash, a miscarriage during a hospital shooting, one of her best friends dying in a bus crash and another one getting a brain tumour, her best friend moving to Germany, her husband dying in a car accident and discovering three half sisters and now she gets attacked by a patient and nearly dies again? And she doesn't need to be committed? Yeah. that makes sense. :S Why does Shonda hate her main character so much? Ok, in reality, this was devastating and a great episode too, but worse- to me anyway, was when Penny Blake came to dinner, and when Mer freaked out after sleeping with Will and kicks him out because she woke up next to someone who wasn't Derek.
If you have felt personally victimised by Shonda Rhimes, raise your hand! *raises hand*
Who's ready for another roller coaster of a season?
